Episode - Choose Your Story review

This is a create-your-world kind of game. It makes you relive movies about typical US high schools which used to be very popular. It has bullies, HBIC, popular and unpopular girls, parties, love, and even sex. It’s advised to play this game since you’re 13.

Storyline 1/10

This game is like a TV show where you should choose what will happen next. Your decisions will affect the result of each episode. There are three stories available in the beginning: The Kiss List, Love Life and the Baby Project, 15 episodes each. Once you play these ones and three more which will be opened later you’ll finish one chapter, and after that, you can play more than 100,000 other stories and you can create your own stories too. You don’t need to wait for it - you can just unlock more stories right away for gems - the main currency in this game. It allows you to make better choices - all free choices are horrible to achieve your goal, so the app forces you to buy gems. They are sold in 20, 50, 100 and 200 packs, the prices for them are from around 2$ until 20$. Each option in the game cost around 20 gems, so it means that for 20$ you will get only 10 choices which aren’t enough, in my opinion, to make the episodes with the happy end.

This game is all about dialogues - you need to click the option to say on the screen. Then it affects the main storyline. Usually, there are three options, one of them is for gems, the one that the game says that is the best. You can also choose what to wear and customize your character in the beginning and throughout the game but you never pick clothes items or face features separately - they give ready looks and outfits. You don’t need to wait for dialogs to finish - you can always click away. But some animation you have to wait to finish which annoying sometimes and unnecessary. For each successful choice you get +1 to fear, desire or relationship. Those points can be retractable so be careful to make the right choice. I personally didn’t hit the right choice button every time.

Graphics 4/10

Episode has cartoon-like graphics. The characters are rather different and you have a variety of clothes not only for your character but for other characters in the game. There’s no proper animation - people in Episode can move their body parts like a mannequin and they become “wavy” when they talk. Their face can change due to emotions, they can walk in “fierce” funny way, they can open their mouths and that’s it for graphics.

Sound 7/10

I like that the music and sounds in this game aren’t annoying. When you start playing it’s already quiet I didn’t even have to switch the sound off like I’m used to. In general, the music and sounds are basic and expectable for this kind of game.

Bad

At first, I thought that it would be fun to play Episode, I thought it would be like Sims where you control lives of your characters. And it is like that, but the theme of this game is disturbing. When you open it for the first time it talks about how it’s great to be a spoiled rich teenager who has a lot of “disposable” boys and girls. When the character got dressed for the first time in almost naked outfit she squatted and stood up in a dirty way. I’m not homophobic and not against having experience in your life but sometimes, like in this game, it can too much. And I think about teenage girls who play Episode, and they think that it’s cool to be like them. I’m worried about what it can teach young people about lifestyle. I wish this app had more moral and humain things to discover. Don’t let your children play this game!
